Interesting and useful perspective. A check of the literature on learning my provide more context. One trial learning is very rare in any organism. Persistence and retrial with feedback is the most effective way to learn. It is likely that most academics have faced similar experiences in their training and publishing efforts. Multiple goals, long and short term; learning how to finish their degrees; learning how to get published etc. The realization that there is error and inconsistency in reinforcement is a great lesson for all aspects of life.
