Entry for 'December 27, 2017'

Dec 27, 1982. Former astronaut Jack Swigert dies of cancer before he takes office in Colorado's 6th US Congressional District. Republican state Sen. Daniel L. Schaefer easily defeated his Democratic opponent March 29, 1983, to win election to the seat left vacant by the death of Jack Swigert.
Schaefer defeated Democrat Steve Hogan, an Aurora city councilman, and independent John Heckman.
Schaefer, a public relations consultant who served two years in the Colorado House before moving to the state Senate in 1978, had taken conservative stands against school busing, the Equal Rights Amendment and legalized abortion.
The special election brought Hogan, 34, his second defeat in five months. Hogan had lost to Swigert in the November 1982 election by a 2-to-1 margin.
Schaefer led Hogan by about 2-to-1 in Arapahoe and Jefferson counties, the largest portions of the district.
